Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, and the early team came from OpenAI. They'd been inside the room where the most powerful models were being built. They understood the trajectory. And they made a bet: that the company most obsessed with safety would also build the best AI. Not in spite of the safety work — because of it.

Most AI companies build guardrails — external rules that constrain behavior. Don't say this. Don't do that. A list of prohibitions bolted onto a system that doesn't understand why they exist.

Anthropic is trying to build something closer to judgment. Constitutional AI trains the model on principles, not just prohibitions. The difference between a fence and a conscience. A fence keeps you in. A conscience helps you decide where to go.

It's the difference between a system that won't help you because it's been told not to, and a system that understands why it shouldn't. One breaks when you find the right prompt. The other adapts because it actually gets it.

Name another AI company that has published a document saying “here are the capability levels where we will stop and reassess before proceeding.”

Anthropic did. It's called the Responsible Scaling Policy. It defines AI Safety Levels — concrete capability thresholds that trigger mandatory safety evaluations before the company proceeds. It's not a PR exercise. It's a self-imposed red line.

In an industry addicted to “ship it,” that takes nerve. It means telling your engineers, your investors, your board: we might stop. Not because we failed. Because we succeeded too well, too fast, without enough understanding. In the history of technology companies, how often has anyone voluntarily slowed down at the moment of their greatest acceleration?

Safety Is Not a Brake, It's Engineering

The misconception: safety slows you down. The reality: safety is what lets you go faster without crashing.

Anthropic isn't the slow car in the race. It's the car with the better brakes, the better roll cage, and the driver who actually read the manual. You want to go 200mph? You'd better have built for it.

This is something I've learned the hard way with --dangerously-skip-permissions. The prompts I was skipping weren't slowing me down — they were my braking system. Without them, I go faster. I also go off the road more often. Safety isn't the thing that holds you back. It's the thing that keeps you on the track.

The Weapons Question

As a USAF veteran, I want the best technology protecting this country. I believe in technological superiority as a strategic imperative. I've served in a world where the quality of your tools determines who comes home.

I also fully support Anthropic's resistance to letting anyone --dangerously-skip safety checks on automated weapons systems.

There is no undo on a missile. There is no “sorry, that wasn't accurate” email after an autonomous strike. The stakes are absolute, and the safety must be absolute too. The same instinct that made me type --dangerously-skip-permissions on a side project would be catastrophic in a weapons system. The speed feels the same. The consequences don't.

You can recover from a misconfigured website. You cannot recover from a miscalculated strike. The fact that someone at Anthropic drew that line — and holds it — matters more than most people realize.
